Southeast Popular Tour - September
17
days |
September 13 to September 29, 2028
Seventeen days through the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, one of the richest and most threatened forests on Earth. The Southeast Popular is our classic journey through this hotspot of endemism. We begin in the lowland reserves of REGUA and climb into the Serra dos Órgãos for the Grey-winged and Black-and-gold Cotingas, whose songs fill the mist. From there we reach Itatiaia, Brazil's first national park, birding from humid forest to the grasslands at 2,800 metres and its namesake Itatiaia Spinetail. We thread the colonial coast of Paraty, the hummingbird feeders of Ubatuba, the araucarias of Campos do Jordão, and the marshes of Salesópolis, home of the critically endangered [São Paulo] Marsh Antwren. The journey ends in the magnificent forests of Intervales and the cave country of PETAR. Across mountains, coast, and forest, it is the Atlantic Forest at its very best.
Difficulty level
Easy-moderate

A mostly easy tour, with light, self-paced walking of 2 to 4 km a day and comfortable lodging throughout. Much of the birding is done from roads, boats, and feeders. The real demands are a moderate uphill walk at Pico da Caledônia (around 1,800 to 2,000 m) for the cotingas, some altitude at Itatiaia, and one long road transfer of about six hours. Warm and humid in the lowlands, cooler in the mountains. Suitable for birders of almost any fitness level.

Carlos was outstanding, not only did he find the target birds, his knowledge of the habitats and non bird species was excellent. He was friendly, helpful, kind and a pleasure to travel with. This trip will stay in my memories forever
