Northeast Brazil Supreme Tour - October

25

days |

October 1 to October 25, 2028

Twenty-five days, six states, and a special bird every single day! The Northeast Supreme is our most complete journey through the Brazilian Northeast. We begin in the Cerrado-Amazon transition of Caxias, hunting the enigmatic Kaempfer's Woodpecker and the elusive Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo, then climb into the humid forest island of Baturité for the Grey-breasted Parakeet, one of the world's rarest parrots. From there we reach the Chapada do Araripe, the only home of the Araripe Manakin. We then cross the Caatinga to the canyons of Canudos for Lear's Macaw, and into the threatened Atlantic Forest of the Pernambuco Center of Endemism. The final stretch runs through the campo rupestre of the Chapada Diamantina, home of the Hooded Visorbearer, and the rich southern-Bahia forests of Boa Nova, Serra Bonita, and Itacaré. Across Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, and Cerrado, it is the Northeast in its fullest, rarest form.

Difficulty level

Moderate

Pink Poppy Flowers

A moderate tour where daily walking stays light, averaging 2 to 4 km on firm, dry ground at a comfortable pace. The real demand is on two days with two steep climbs that require some fitness, though anyone can wait near the vehicle or rest at the hotel. Expect warm days (28 to 34°C), a few early starts, and two or three long road transfers, balanced by comfortable lodging throughout and good roads. Mosquitoes appear in places; no altitude concerns. Suitable for reasonably fit birders.

I was so impressed that our guide's knowledge of the birds habits, vocalizations, mini-econiches, and recent areas of occurrence was so complete. He is obviously very well liked and highly regarded by his colleagues as whenever he sought new information for species we 'needed' he was greeted eagerly. I think everyone in Brasil's birding and accommodations community must be very fond of him. We could not have been happier with our tour.

Our tour with BBE in NE Brazil was exceptionally well organized with a focus on finding us many many of the most rare birds in the area. It was well considered to maximize our early morning and late afternoon birding with transfers during the hot portion of the day. Our guide Felipe was excellent in his knowledge of the birds and making sure he was well organized to keep on track of time and knowing exactly where the best birds would be! We stayed in some delightful small remote accommodations when available.

We LOVE Brazil Birding Experts - a top notch organization that worked hard to see that we saw fantastic birds and had a great experience. Besides the careful planning for bird species we also greatly appreciated the effort in getting us into outstanding lodging and meals. We loved the personal interaction with the smaller lodge owners and local guides. There are many birding company choices but what makes BBE the best is that it is about more than just the seeing the birds; a care for the environment, for the clients and a total well-being for all involved.

Our 15-day tour of Northeast Brazil was stupendous! Our guide Caio Brito is a top-notch birder who knows where the birds are and how to find them, all done with great passion and joy. He has deep knowledge about the birds, subspecies, likely splits, and their conservation status and issues. We saw almost every bird on our (very long) target list! In addition to being an expert guide, Caio is personable, full of good humor, considerate, and caring. He thought of ways of improving our odds of spotting a target bird and was indefatigable in tracking them down. We also observed his respect for everyone with whom he dealt, from hotel owners to gas station attendants, which was reciprocated, making our trip smooth and a joy. From a physical comfort standpoint, he anticipated everything we might need. Plus he knows the best eating spots! His (and Brazil Birding Experts') organization and planning skills were superb-- there were no hiccups on our trip. We are very happy with this unforgettable and seamless birding trip.

One of the best tours i've been on that got the birds I wanted to see.

Everything was excellent. We even survived the 600-710 km transports due to good driving and cars (a new Jeep and an OK Renault Duster).
