Central Brazil Tour - October
13
days |
October 18 to October 30, 2028
Thirteen days through the heart of the Cerrado, Brazil's most underrated and most threatened biome. From the dramatic plateaus and waterfalls of Chapada dos Veadeiros, we work open grasslands for Cerrado jewels like the Cock-tailed Tyrant and Chapada Flycatcher, then reach the karst country of Terra Ronca, the surest place on Earth for the endemic Pfrimer's Parakeet. The manakin-rich forests of the Serra dos Pireneus give way to the Araguaia River at Aruanã, where riverine endemics like the Araguaia Spinetail and Bananal Antbird share the banks with caimans, giant otters, and river dolphins. We finish in the legendary grasslands of Emas National Park, a Cerrado stronghold of Giant Anteaters, Maned Wolves, and open-country birds. A journey through every face of the Cerrado, from waterfall to savanna to river.
Difficulty level
Easy-moderate

One of the gentler tours physically. Walking is light and self-paced, 2 to 4 km a day and up to 6 at most, on firm, dry ground with no real climbs, and much of the birding is done from the vehicle and open Cerrado. The main demands are the heat (often above 35°C, though dry) and a few long road transfers of up to 4 to 6 hours, plus a relaxed boat trip on the Araguaia. Comfortable lodging and a rhythm with rest days throughout. Suitable for birders of almost any fitness level.
