Rondônia/Acre Popular Tour - June

19

days |

June 3 to June 21, 2028

Nineteen days deep in the western Brazilian Amazon, chasing birds that exist nowhere else on Earth. This tour traces the Aripuanã-Machado interfluvium, one of the planet's richest cradles of recently described species, where birds predicted by biogeography were later found exactly where science said they would be. From Porto Velho and the transition forests of Humaitá to the deep terra firme of Pousada PiraAçu and the endemic-rich Amazon Roosevelt, we work toward specialties like the Predicted Antwren, Western Striolated Puffbird, Rondonia Bushbird, and Rio Madeira Stipplethroat. We finish among the bamboo stands around Rio Branco, in Acre, home to fifty-plus bamboo specialists found in few other places. With a checklist topping 770 species, this is hardcore Amazonian birding for those drawn to endemics, mystery, and the frontier edge of ornithology: humid, immersive, and deeply rewarding.

Difficulty level

Moderate

Pink Poppy Flowers

A solid moderate tour, where the demand is daily walking rather than rough conditions. Expect to cover seven kilometres or more a day on uneven, root-and-rock terra firme trails at a moderate pace, in heat above 35°C. The rhythm is the usual morning-and-afternoon birding with a midday break, eased by built-in rest days, comfortable lodging throughout, and reliable facilities. Long but tranquil boat rides reach the river sites, and deep Amazonia calls for malaria and yellow-fever precautions. Best for reasonably fit birders happy walking forest in the heat.

The guide, Bruno Renno, was truly exceptional in every way - fantastic birding skills.

BBE provided another superb tour with a skilled, hard working guide who very quickly worked out what made us tick and adjusted his style accordingly. I’d love to bird with Bruno again sometime.

BBE planned and executed our tours to find the most birds possible. I wound up with 746 birds seen, and another 50 plus heard only. And we had great fun in the process! Both guides were top notch, recognizing the faintest of songs and the shortest of chirps. Caio's enthusiasm and high energy level in particular drove us to new heights! We had memorable, almost spiritual experiences with several birds thanks to Caio's willingness to go off the beaten path. Each guide also could tap into a network of birding experts who could provide tips for finding the more difficult birds. I also compliment the organization of the BBE team, who not only put together a complicated tour package and made all the adjustments needed when Rio Grande do Sul's airport flooded but also thought of our comfort, such as booking a day hotel for us for our long layover in Sao Paulo. I also recognize the importance Caio and the other BBE guides are playing to introducing new areas to birding, such as the unmatched experience of the pristine birding at Pira Acu, and I understand more new areas for birding are being explored. Many thanks to Caio and Fernando for their excellence and their patience. I also commend BBE for continually striving to exceed its already stellar performance. Bravo, BBE!!

This was an excellent tour of Rondonia and Acre lead by Bruno, with superb birds throughout and the right balance of time at each site.
