Northeast Brazil Supreme Tour

August 20 to September 13, 2026

25

days

Difficulty

Medium

This is the most complete journey we offer through Northeast Brazil — a deep, carefully crafted expedition across some of the most diverse, challenging, and rewarding birding regions in the country. Over 25 days, we cross six states, moving through Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, Cerrado, campo rupestre, coastal lowlands, and isolated forest refuges that hold some of the rarest birds on the planet.
The tour begins in the transition zones of Maranhão and Piauí, where the legendary Kaempfer’s Woodpecker still survives, and gradually unfolds through a string of iconic sites: humid forest “islands” like Guaramiranga, dramatic Caatinga landscapes in Quixadá and Canudos, the global stronghold of Lear’s Macaw, and the extraordinary Chapada do Araripe — the only place on Earth to see the Araripe Manakin.
From there, we enter the most threatened portion of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest: the Pernambuco Center of Endemism. Here, fragments like Serra do Urubu shelter an astonishing concentration of globally endangered species, including Seven-colored Tanager, Orange-bellied Antwren, Alagoas Tyrannulet, Willis’s Antbird, and the dazzling Long-tailed Woodnymph. It’s one of the most intense and meaningful sections of the journey, where birding and conservation are inseparable.
As the route continues south into Bahia, the scenery and avifauna shift once again. Chapada Diamantina brings wide-open landscapes and highland endemics like Hooded Visorbearer and Diamantina Tapaculo, while Boa Nova, Serra Bonita, Serra das Lontras, and the lowland forests of Itacaré represent the very best of Atlantic Forest birding — from vine forests and hummingbird gardens to some of the last refuges of species like Slender Antbird, Banded Cotinga, Boa Nova Tapaculo, and Bahia Tapaculo.
This is not a rushed checklist tour. It’s a demanding, rewarding expedition designed for birders who want to understand Northeast Brazil in depth — its birds, its landscapes, and the people and projects working to keep these places alive. If there is such a thing as a “once-in-a-lifetime” birding journey in Brazil, this is it.

Difficulty level

This tour is designed to be accessible and comfortable for most travelers. While there are quite a few long drives on the trip, the birding itself is generally relaxed, with most outings taking place near or around the vehicle. Walks are short and easy-paced. Some of the longer walks are about 4 km and the longest one does not exceed 7 km. On the day we go for the Boa Nova Tapaculo, higher physical conditions are necessary since it is a steep hike ranging from 8 to 10 km.

One of the best tours i've been on that got the birds I wanted to see.

Thomas V. Heatley

We LOVE Brazil Birding Experts - a top notch organization that worked hard to see that we saw fantastic birds and had a great experience. Besides the careful planning for bird species we also greatly appreciated the effort in getting us into outstanding lodging and meals. We loved the personal interaction with the smaller lodge owners and local guides. There are many birding company choices but what makes BBE the best is that it is about more than just the seeing the birds; a care for the environment, for the clients and a total well-being for all involved.

I was so impressed that our guide's knowledge of the birds habits, vocalizations, mini-econiches, and recent areas of occurrence was so complete. He is obviously very well liked and highly regarded by his colleagues as whenever he sought new information for species we 'needed' he was greeted eagerly. I think everyone in Brasil's birding and accommodations community must be very fond of him. We could not have been happier with our tour.

Our tour with BBE in NE Brazil was exceptionally well organized with a focus on finding us many many of the most rare birds in the area. It was well considered to maximize our early morning and late afternoon birding with transfers during the hot portion of the day. Our guide Felipe was excellent in his knowledge of the birds and making sure he was well organized to keep on track of time and knowing exactly where the best birds would be! We stayed in some delightful small remote accommodations when available.

Sheldon McGregor

Everything was excellent. We even survived the 600-710 km transports due to good driving and cars (a new Jeep and an OK Renault Duster).

Erling Jirle

So many ultra rare, ultra endemic birds and just all round great birds on this tour. Fantastic guiding, great food and wonderful country
