The Endangered Northeast Extension - October/November

Four days, five of the Northeast's most threatened birds, and one of the most endangered forests on Earth. This extension dives into the Pernambuco Center of Endemism, the battered Atlantic Forest fragments of Alagoas and Pernambuco, in search of species clinging to existence. Here we look for the Orange-bellied Antwren, the dazzling Seven-colored Tanager, the all-but-vanishing Pernambuco Foliage-gleaner, and the strangely distributed Forbes's Blackbird, birds whose entire world has shrunk to a handful of hillside woodlots. Between the tense searches, a single hummingbird garden offers pure joy, with up to twenty species buzzing at arm's length and unbeatable photography. This is birding with the weight of conservation behind every sighting: some of these species may not survive the coming decades, and seeing them now is both a privilege and a reckoning.
