Eliene Fontes
Eliene was born in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon, where her lifelong connection with nature — especially birds — first took root. She went on to study Biology, joining projects on urbanization and sustainability education, and later earned her Master’s degree in Ecology at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA). Her research focused on the conservation of the Purple Martin, a migratory species in decline, and took her to an extraordinary roost of nearly 300,000 birds on an island in the Rio Negro. By tracking their movements, she uncovered new insights into their wintering behavior.
It was during her master’s that Eliene first crossed paths with birdwatching tourism. While welcoming North American visitors eager to witness the spectacle of Purple Martins, she realized how powerful it was to combine science, conservation, and travel to inspire people. This experience eventually led her to guiding, where she not only shared birds with visitors but also discovered a real passion for the behind-the-scenes work of logistics and planning — making sure each journey was seamless and unforgettable.
Today, Eliene brings that same blend of scientific knowledge, love for birds, and care for people to her work at Brazil Birding Experts, where she helps travelers from around the world discover the extraordinary birdlife of Brazil.
